Bathroom Lighting Planning: What Homeowners Forget

Lighting is the cheapest part of a bathroom remodel and the one most likely to make a beautiful room feel wrong. It is also the least reversible: once the drywall is closed and the tile is up, adding a fixture means opening walls you just finished paying to close.

The good news is that bathroom lighting is a solved problem. It just has to be decided early — during rough-in, alongside plumbing, not while picking out a mirror.

One ceiling light is why your bathroom looks bad

The default builder bathroom has a single fixture in the middle of the ceiling. It's the worst possible position for the one task you actually do in a bathroom: looking at your own face.

An overhead light casts downward. On a face, that means shadows in the eye sockets, under the nose, and beneath the chin — the lighting equivalent of holding a torch under your chin, inverted. You look tired, and shaving or applying makeup is guesswork.

Everything below is really about fixing that one problem and then not creating new ones.

A small bathroom does not need all five. It needs the first three. Ambient plus proper vanity task lighting plus a shower light is a complete, well-lit bathroom, and it is not an expensive specification.

Vanity lighting: the one thing to get right

Light your face from the sides, at roughly face height. That's the whole rule.

Two sconces flanking the mirror, mounted around 60–66 inches from the floor and roughly 28–40 inches apart, throw light across the face from both sides and cancel each other's shadows. This is how theatre dressing rooms have been lit for a century, for exactly this reason.

If side sconces genuinely don't fit — a narrow wall, a window, a mirror that spans the whole vanity — the alternatives in descending order of quality:

  • A backlit or edge-lit LED mirror, which produces soft light from the right direction
  • A horizontal bar fixture above the mirror, ideally at least 24 inches wide and with a diffuse shade pointing down and out. Better than nothing; still casts some downward shadow.
  • Recessed cans in front of the mirror rather than above it, so light falls on your face rather than the top of your head.

A test worth doing before you commit

Stand at your current mirror and hold a lamp at eye height to one side, then the other, then above. The difference is immediate and obvious, and it will settle any argument about whether sconces are worth the wiring.

Shower and wet-area fixtures

A shower needs its own light. Without one you have a dark box in the corner of an otherwise bright room, and shaving legs or reading a shampoo bottle becomes an act of faith.

The fixture must be rated for the location. Fixtures carry ratings — damp-rated for humid spaces, wet-rated for direct water contact. Inside a shower enclosure, use wet-rated. It is not an upsell; it's an electrical requirement and a safety one.

There are also restrictions on what can be installed above and near a tub or shower, and how close ordinary fixtures may come to water. Your electrician will know the local rules, and an inspector will check them. This is a reason to have licensed electrical work and a permit rather than a favour from a friend.

Colour temperature and CRI

Two numbers on the box decide whether your bathroom feels like a home or a clinic.

  • Colour temperature (K). 2700K is warm and yellow, like a traditional bulb. 3000K is warm-neutral. 4000K starts to feel commercial. For bathrooms, 2700K–3000K is the comfortable range. Higher than that and you're in a hospital corridor.
  • CRI (Colour Rendering Index). How faithfully a light shows colour, out of 100. Below 80 and skin tones go flat and grey, which is a real problem in the one room where you assess your own face and choose what to wear. Look for CRI 90+ at the vanity.

Whatever you choose, use the same colour temperature for every fixture in the room. Mixing 2700K sconces with 4000K downlights is instantly visible and looks like a mistake, because it is one.

Dimming, and why it matters more here than anywhere

The bathroom is used at both extremes of the day: bright and functional at 7am, and briefly at 2am when you do not want to be fully woken. Dimmers cost little at rough-in and are the difference between a room that works twice a day and one that assaults you once.

Two cautions. Confirm your LED fixtures are actually dimmable, and pair them with a compatible dimmer — mismatches cause flicker and buzzing that cannot be fixed afterwards without replacing parts. And put the vanity lights on their own dimmer, separate from the ceiling.

The switching plan

Almost nobody plans switching, and almost everybody notices it afterwards. Decide, on paper, before rough-in:

  • What is on which switch — ambient, vanity, shower, and fan should not all be one circuit
  • Where the switches are as you walk in, in the dark, with wet hands
  • Whether the fan is switched separately, or run by a humidity sensor or timer so it actually runs long enough after a shower
  • Whether a night-level light can come on without the main lights

Ganging everything onto one switch is the cheapest option at rough-in and the one you'll regret daily.

Electrical safety essentials

Bathrooms combine water and electricity, so the rules are stricter and inspectors pay attention:

  • GFCI protection for bathroom receptacles — this is non-negotiable and it is what stops a dropped hairdryer from being fatal
  • Adequate circuits — modern bathrooms with heated floors, a fan, and a hair dryer need more than one lonely circuit
  • Correct fixture ratings in wet and damp locations
  • Permitted, inspected work — the inspection is a free second opinion on the safety of your own house

  • Decide all lighting before rough-in, not at selections
  • Light the face from the sides at 60–66" — sconces, or a backlit mirror
  • Add a wet-rated fixture inside the shower
  • Use one colour temperature throughout, 2700K–3000K
  • Specify CRI 90+ at the vanity
  • Put vanity and ambient on separate dimmers
  • Confirm fixtures are dimmable and dimmers are compatible
  • Plan where switches sit as you enter
  • Put the fan on a timer or humidity sensor
